Do you have a problem with a high noise floor on HF due to local interference? We did here at Omni RF HQ until I found the excellent Loop On Ground design by KK5JY which totally transformed the receive side of our station. The S9+10dB of noise on 80 meters vanished and was replaced by cleaner signals with an SNR improvement of between 3 to 6dB.
The Folded Dipole On Ground (FDOG) is a variant of the original Loop On Ground but designed for the user with limited space and other restrictions that prevent a loop style element being used.
The FDOG is designed to use an element between 30′ to 100′ long and only 6″ wide. The Folded Dipole style element makes it easy to place this dedicated receive antenna along a fence line or even down a side passageway.
The FDOG uses the same high quality isolated ferrite transformer as our original Loop On Ground with a custom made genuine Fair-Rite binocular core to minimise loss. In testing we’ve found signals to be around 2dB less than a Loop On Ground of the same size which is a small price to pay for such a discrete antenna for the space constrained station. Being long and narrow, the main axis of reception is perpendicular to the long sides of the element, much like a standard dipole but with less acute nulls on the ends.
The enclosure is custom 3D printed in ASA, a high quality ABS type material with superior UV resistance, complete with rubber sealing washers for the element connectors and a lid sealing gasket to keep the weather out. It comes complete with handy holes for use with the supplied galvanised steel ground peg for installing on soft ground.
All the nuts and bolts are A2 Stainless Steel with wing nuts for the element connection to allow an easy install and high quality coax connectors are used on all versions.
The internal PCB has several additional jumpers to allow for simple future expansion with our add-on boards such as the Active Pre-amplifier (coming soon), AM Broadcast Band Filter (coming soon) or the Experimenter Board (coming soon). We also apply a solderable conformal coating to the PCB to help protect the components from the elements while still allowing for easy repair or modification.
