Description

Do you have a problem with a high noise floor on HF due to local interference? We did here at Omni RF HQ until I found the excellent Loop On Ground design by KK5JY which totally transformed the receive side of our station. The S9+10dB of noise on 80 meters vanished and was replaced by cleaner signals with an SNR improvement of between 3 to 6dB.

The Loop On Ground (LOG) antenna is made in its original design from a 15′ x 15′ square of wire laid on the ground, fed via an isolated ferrite transformer and connected to a receiver with coax cable. While testing, we found that the original 15′ x 15′ version works well on 30 meters and up and a larger version made from a 25′ x 25′ square works better on the lower bands like 40, 60, 80 and 160 meters.

This Omni RF version of the Loop On Ground Transformer uses a diferent core to the original design which provides less loss and higher performance on the lower bands. We use genuine Fair-Rite cores wound with enamelled copper wire and a custom turn ratio that produced the best results after 6 months of testing . The enclosure is custom 3D printed in ASA, a high quality ABS type material with superior UV resistance and comes with a galvanised steel ground peg for installing on soft ground.

All the nuts and bolts are marine grade Stainless Steel with wing nuts for the loop connection to allow an easy install and high quality coax connectors are used on all versions.

The internal PCB has several additional jumpers to allow for simple future expansion with our add-on boards such as the Active Pre-amplifier (coming soon), AM Broadcast Band Filter (coming soon) or the Experimenter Board (coming soon). We also apply a solderable conformal coating to the PCB to help protect the components from the elements while still allowing for easy repair or modification.

You can choose between three different versions which have different transformers based on the desired connector and output impedance:

  • SO239 – 50 ohm
  • BNC – 50 ohm
  • F Type – 75 ohm
